Washer Repair

Even if your Whirlpool top-load washer looks and functions like every top-load washer out there, it is intrinsically different. Even among other Whirlpool brand washers, it is different. When it comes to maintaining and repairing your appliances, you need to know the specifics about the washer that you own. There is no more concrete way to tell those specifics than by the serial number it was given when that specific line of washers was manufactured.

Also known as the model number, this is a specific code given to all washers in your specific line of washers in that size and with the features, it comes from. It will help both owners and professional repair technicians alike know all the information they need to maintain and repair your washer. However, sometimes, finding the serial number for your Whirlpool appliance isn’t the most obvious thing in the world. The nice thing about Whirlpool is it has a certain brand consistency. A serial number location on one model of a top-load Whirlpool washer will be in the same location on another model. The location will of course vary on front-load washers, however.

How to Find the Serial Number on a Top-Load Whirlpool Washer

If you have just recently installed your washer, it may be a good idea to locate the serial number right away and write it down for your records. The sticker is very sturdy and always put in a location where it will be protected from water exposure, but nothing is completely impervious. Most commonly, you will find the plaque with the number wears and is hard to read given enough time. No matter whether you are looking at a newly installed model or a much older one, here is how to find the serial number on your Whirlpool top-load washer.

  • Step 1 — Open Your Washer Lid

You may have read that some other brands have the series number on the outside of the unit or on the kick plate, but in Whirlpool brands, it will be more on the interior. This means it will require you to open the lid up in order to see it.

  • Step 2 — Look Along the Inner Rim

You will want to look along the metal edge of the interior. It is essentially the rim where the washer door will cover when closed. It is the rim where the exterior ends and the tub of the interior will begin just under it.

  • Step 3 — The Serial Number is Located on the Back of the Rim

There is a small plaque sticker located on the back of the washer. You will want to look for a serial number that may not be exactly like but will be formatted similarly to these popular Whirlpool washer model numbers. These numbers include:

  • WTW5100HW
  • WTW2000HW
  • WTW5105HW
  • WTW4850HW

In Whirlpool specific brands, the serial number will always begins with a “W,” which can help you differentiate it from other numbers you may see on the plaque.

What is a Serial Number on an Appliance Used For Anyway?

Now that you know how to find the model number on your top-load Whirlpool washer, what do you do with it exactly? Perhaps unexpectedly, the serial number is your key to a lot of different things that you may need to do for your washer over a lifetime of use, including:

  • Purchasing Replacement Parts

The most obvious need for a serial number from your appliance is because something is malfunctioning and you need to replace apart. A drain pump, for example, is something that every washer has. However, the drain pump may not be the same in one top-load washer as it is in another, even within the Whirlpool brand. However, with the serial number on hand, you can get the exact replacement. This means there is no wondering if it will fit in its space or have the same connections because it will.

  • Finding Your Owner’s Manual

When you first installed your Whirlpool washer, you probably shoved your owner’s manual in a drawer somewhere or it got accidentally tossed out. When the washer is working well, we don’t give a second thought to the manual. It is only if we want to know how to use a function or if there is a problem that we go looking for it. Of course, at that point, it is likely nowhere to be found. Having a serial number makes it easy to look up the exact owner’s manual online to get the information you need.

  • To Help Your Repair Technician

Often when you call a professional service for a repair, one of the things they will ask from you before even coming out is the serial number of your appliance. This allows them to prep for their service call so they aren’t sitting around doing that in your home. What the serial number can do for them is they will bring replacement parts for that model for what they suspect is the issue as well as download a copy of the manual for that model. It means they come with the correct tools for the job and maybe even the part that will have it fixed right away unless the problem ends up being something much different than they expected.

  • Filing a Warranty Claim

If your washer is new enough to still be under a warranty, you will definitely need a serial number in order to file a warranty claim. While it may be a hassle to find the number and make the claim, being able to take advantage of that warranty can net you some tidy savings when it comes to repairing or even full replacement depending on the issue.

Luckily, finding the model number on your top-load Whirlpool brand washer is pretty easy. It is good news because it is a number that can have a lot of uses if you want to repair your washer without a lot of headache, guesswork, and scrambling around.
