Whether you’ve got a front-load, top-load, or a Laundry Center washer-dryer combo, this guide will help you troubleshoot your Frigidaire washer and get it working properly again. Keep reading to learn why your Frigidaire washer won’t spin or agitate.
1. Door switch (front-load models)
If your front-load washer doesn’t spin or agitate, a faulty door switch might be the issue—especially if you hear a loud buzzing sound coming from near the door when attempting to run a cycle. That’s because a faulty switch can trick the machine into thinking the door’s open—even when it’s actually shut.
Replacing the switch is relatively simple and inexpensive on many Frigidaire front-load models. Here are the general steps involved:
- Unplug the washer.
- Open the door and peel back the rubber boot (seal) near the latch using a paint scraper if glued or after removing the spring clip, depending on your model.
- You only need to peel it back enough to reveal the two screws beneath securing the door switch assembly.
- Remove the screws, disconnect the wire harnesses, and pull out the old switch.
- Use a multimeter to check the old switch for continuity. If the reading shows no continuity, the lid switch needs to be replaced.
- Connect the wire harnesses to the new switch, secure it in the correct place with screws, and reposition the rubber boot.
2. Motor control board (front-load models)
A faulty motor control board is another common issue, especially in front-load Frigidaire models that have been overloaded with laundry, causing it to burn out. Fortunately, replacing it is often relatively straightforward:
- Unplug the washer.
- Remove the bottom front panel to access the motor control board and its housing, located near the back of the washer.
- Remove the two or more Philips screws securing the motor control board housing.
- You may also need to cut the cable ties to secure the motor control board’s wire harnesses (be careful not to cut the wires). This will enable you to pull the motor control board and its housing out from under the appliance.
- Disconnect the wire harnesses and unclip the old control board from its housing.
- Inspect the old control board for signs of damage, such as burn marks, melted plastic, or bulging capacitors. Replace if damaged.
- Place the new board in the housing, reconnect the wire harnesses, and install it in the same place as the old one with the screws.
3. Lid switch (top-load models)
If the lid switch is defective, your washer won’t spin or agitate. This part acts as a safety feature, preventing the washer from operating when the lid is open. Over time, the switch can wear out or fail.
To check if it’s faulty, use a multimeter to test for continuity. If the reading shows no continuity, the switch needs to be replaced. This is usually a straightforward fix—follow these steps to do:
- Unplug the washer.
- Use a putty knife to release the retaining clips securing the top panel.
- Lift up the top panel to find the lid switch beneath or near the lid hinge.
- Disconnect the wires connected to the switch and unscrew the mounting screws holding it in place.
- Install the new lid switch, positioning it correctly, connecting the wires, and securing it with the mounting screws.
4. Drive belt
Washers that use a belt to spin the drum—like many top-load and washer-dryer combo Frigidaire models, as well as some front-load models—can stop spinning or agitating if the belt becomes worn, breaks, or slips off the pulleys. This can happen over time from regular use or if the washer is frequently overloaded.
How you access and replace the belt depends on whether you have a front-load, top-load, or combo unit since different panels need to be removed. The size and type of belt can also vary, so make sure to follow specific instructions and order the correct replacement for your model.
Once you’ve got access to the belt, it’s just a matter of removing the old one and looping the new belt (grooved side down) over the motor shaft and drive pulley (for front-load models) or the motor pulley and transmission pulley—and possibly the idler pulley, depending on the model (for top-load and combo units). After that, rotate the pulleys to make sure the belt is properly aligned.
5. Clogged drain pump
If your Frigidaire washer won’t spin, it might be because the drain pump is obstructed. A clogged pump can prevent water from draining properly, which in turn prevents the washer from spinning.
On front-load models, follow these steps to check the pump:
- Unplug the washer.
- Bail out any water left in the tub and tilt the washer backward at a 45-degree angle.
- Remove the bottom front panel.
- Place towels and a bowl beneath the pump area.
- Release the spring clamp securing the drain hose to the pump.
- Disconnect the drain hose from the pump. Be aware that a lot of water may spill out.
- Feel or look inside the pump where the hose was connected for clogs or obstructions near the impeller (the small fan-like part).
- Remove any foreign objects or grime you find.
On top-load models, follow these steps to check the pump:
- Unplug the washer.
- Tape the lid shut to keep it secure.
- Use a putty knife to release the spring clips holding the top panel.
- Lift up the top panel, then remove the front panel.
- Release the clamps securing the inlet and drain hoses to the pump.
- Disconnect the wires connected to the pump and remove the mounting screws holding it to the base.
- Place towels to catch any water that spills out, then disconnect the hoses.
- Remove the pump and inspect it for damage or any foreign objects/clogs inside.
- Clear out any obstructions. If the pump is undamaged, reinstall it.
- If the pump is damaged (like a cracked housing), replace it with a new one and install it.
