If your Maytag MFI2570FEZ keeps the freezer cold but the fresh food section drifts warm, the appliance is usually working harder than you think. This French door model makes all of its cold air in the freezer, then pushes it up into the refrigerator through a duct in the back wall. When that airflow gets interrupted, the freezer stays fine and the upper section warms up. That single detail explains most “fridge warm, freezer cold” calls our technicians run across Florida and Georgia.
Here is what to look at, roughly in the order a trained tech would.
Start with airflow inside the cabinet. On French door and bottom freezer Maytags, the return air vents sit in the back corners of the fresh food section. A stack of leftovers, a cereal box, or a bag of produce pushed against that back wall can choke the flow. Pull items a few inches off the rear panel and clear anything sitting directly over a vent, then give it a few hours.
Next, check for frost behind the back panel. The MFI2570FEZ relies on an automatic defrost cycle to keep the evaporator coil clear. If the defrost system falters, frost builds on the coil and on the vents, and warm air is the first symptom. You may also notice the freezer running colder than usual or food in the upper crisper freezing on one side. That pattern is common on this model and points toward the defrost components or the evaporator fan rather than a dead compressor.
The evaporator fan is the part that moves cold air up into the fridge. If it stops spinning, the freezer can still hold temperature while the refrigerator climbs. A fan that grinds, clicks, or goes silent is worth a professional look.
Then there are the basics that get overlooked. Condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair make the whole system inefficient, so they should be cleaned every six to twelve months. Confirm the refrigerator is set near 37 degrees and the freezer near 0 degrees, and rule out a “showroom” or demo mode if the unit was recently moved or lost power. Inspect the door gaskets for tears or a poor seal, which let cold air leak out and humid air in. In Florida and Georgia humidity, a weak gasket shows up faster than it would up north.
What you can safely handle yourself: clearing vents, cleaning coils, checking settings, and inspecting gaskets. What is better left to a technician: anything involving the defrost system, the evaporator fan, the sealed system, or the control board. Those require diagnosis with the right tools, and guessing usually means replacing parts that were never the problem.
