GE Gas Oven Not Heating? The Problem Is Likely One of These 4 Parts

Oven Repair

You turn the dial to Bake, set the temperature to 350°, and wait. Ten minutes later, the display says it’s preheating, but when you open the door, it’s stone cold inside.

At Flamingo Appliance Service, we know how frustrating this is—especially when you have a family to feed. While we are the Southeast’s premier Factory Certified Care provider for Whirlpool Corporation, our factory-trained technicians service all major brands, including thousands of GE gas ranges across Florida and Georgia every year.

If your GE gas oven isn’t lighting, it rarely means the entire stove is broken. Usually, it’s a single component failure. Here is what our technicians check first.

1. The #1 Culprit: A Weak Igniter

In a GE gas oven, the igniter does two jobs: it glows hot enough to light the gas, and it draws enough electrical current to open the safety valve.

  • The Symptom: You might see the igniter glowing orange at the bottom of the oven, but the gas never whooshes on.
  • The Reality: Just because it’s glowing doesn’t mean it’s working. As igniters age, they get “weak.” They might glow, but they can’t pull the required amperage to open the gas valve. If it takes more than 90 seconds to light, or doesn’t light at all, the igniter is effectively dead.
  • The Fix: This is the most common repair we perform on gas ranges. It requires replacing the igniter assembly.

2. The Safety Valve

The safety valve ensures that gas isn’t released until the igniter is hot enough to burn it immediately.

  • The Check: If your igniter is brand new (or tests perfectly fine with a multimeter) but you still have no flame, the safety valve itself may have failed electrically or mechanically stuck closed.
  • Safety Note: This involves working directly with gas lines. We highly recommend having a certified professional handle this repair to prevent leaks.

3. The Temperature Sensor

Sometimes the oven lights, but it shuts off too early or takes forever to reach temperature.

  • Where is it? Look for a small metal probe sticking out of the back wall of the oven interior.
  • The Issue: If this sensor bumps against the wall or gets covered in grime, it can send false readings to the control board, telling the oven it’s 400°F when it’s actually only 200°F.
  • Quick Tip: Ensure the sensor isn’t touching the oven walls. If it looks damaged, it likely needs replacement.

4. Power Issue (Yes, Even for Gas!)

It sounds obvious, but we see it often. Your gas range still needs electricity to power the clock, control board, and igniter.

  • The Check: If the digital clock is blank, check your circuit breaker. If the clock is on but the oven won’t heat, you can rule out the power source.
