Microwaves are usually pretty hassle-free appliances, so it’s always a shock when an error code pops up. If your KitchenAid microwave is displaying an error code, there’s no need to panic and call in a technician. Many of the error codes can be easily cleared and fixed with no need for professional help.

How do error codes work

Error codes are like a shortcut to help you figure out what is wrong with your appliance. Instead of just stopping working and giving you no clue as to what is wrong, an error code helps you by letting you know the nature of the error. This enables the owner of an appliance or an appliance repair technician to find a fix far more quickly and efficiently.

Error codes are detected by sensors within your microwave which monitor the different components of the appliance while operating. If a fault is detected, the microwave’s control board generates an error code and displays it on the screen. You can then look up the error code either in your appliance manual or online to find out what to do.

What to do if your microwave shows an error code

Although error codes are designed to alert users to specific faults within their microwave, sometimes they are displayed when there is no underlying fault. This is particularly common if your microwave has experienced a power surge or outage, or a software glitch of some kind. In these cases, resetting your microwave is usually sufficient to clear the error code and resume normal microwave operation.

We recommend that you try to reset your microwave as the first step whenever you encounter an error code. If the code is legitimate it will recur as soon as you try to use your appliance, and if it was generated in error, you’ll be able to use your microwave as normal. Here’s how to do it:

  • Power down the microwave, either by unplugging it or turning off the corresponding circuit breaker.
  • Wait for one full minute.
  • Restore power to your KitchenAid microwave
  • Test to see if the microwave is functional by heating a cup of water in the microwave for one minute. If the error code doesn’t recur, it is likely just a glitch.

Individual error codes and their fixes

While these are the most common error codes, they may display differently depending on your model of KitchenAid microwave. If you encounter an error code not on our list, consult your manual for more information – after first attempting the reset method outlined above.

F1E4

This error code indicates there is an issue with the wiring or with the control board. To solve this issue, first attempt a reset to see if that clears the problem. If the error recurs, it suggests that you will need to replace the control board.

You can either call in a professional technician or order a replacement part and do it yourself. Only attempt this repair if you are experienced with electrical DIY, as it can be difficult to do if inexperienced.

F1E5

This error code indicates an issue with the inverter or magnetron tube. Attempt a standard reset, but if the code appears again one of these parts will need to be replaced. As before, only attempt this if experienced as working with electrical components can be dangerous.

F2E0 or F2E1

This error indicates a problem in the connection between the touchpad and the control board. If a reset doesn’t clear it, either the touchpad or the control board may need replacing.

F2E3

This code indicates an issue with the touchpad. If a reset doesn’t work, check the touchpad for stuck keys as follows:

  • First, thoroughly clean the touchpad with a slightly moistened microfiber cloth.
  • Carefully press each button, massaging the corners to see if there are any stuck keys. If one feels stuck, gently manipulate it until you feel it pop out.
  • Once all keys are unstuck, reset your microwave again then wait to see if the error recurs.

Flashing time, POWER LOSS or 12:00

If your microwave has experienced a power interruption due to an outage, the display will feature a flashing time or the words ‘POWER LOSS.’ This error is just designed to alert you to the fact that there has been a power outage and should not affect the usage of your KitchenAid microwave. To fix it, simply press CANCEL to clear the error, then set the microwave clock as normal.

DOOR

This error code may also display as OPEN/CLOSE DOOR, depending on which model of appliance you own. This code is designed to either alert you to the fact that you haven’t opened the door since running your microwave, or that the door is not closing properly. Here’s how to fix it:

  • If the code is displaying simply because the microwave has finished and you haven’t taken your food out, simply open the microwave and remove the heated contents. This will clear the error.
  • Check to see if something is preventing your door from closing properly. If your microwave is brand new, there may be some packaging remaining that is obstructing the door latch.
  • Check to ensure that no grime or debris is coating the door latch that may be preventing it from closing.

LOC or LOCK

This code means that the control lock or child lock has been activated. To fix this, either refer to your KitchenAid manual to find out how to unlock your specific model or perform a reset to clear the code.
