Step 1: Check for Simple Obstructions Inside
First, look inside the dishwasher tub, paying close attention to the very bottom near the drain opening. Large food particles, labels that have washed off items, or small objects (like plastic pieces or glass shards) can sometimes block the drain before water even reaches the filter system. Carefully remove any visible debris you find.
Step 2: Thoroughly Clean the Dishwasher Filter System
A clogged filter is one of the most frequent reasons for dishwasher draining issues. Accumulated food particles prevent water from leaving the tub efficiently. Cleaning the filter regularly (monthly is often recommended, but frequency depends on usage) is key to maintaining performance.
- Locate the Filter Assembly: This is typically found at the bottom-center of the dishwasher tub. It usually consists of two parts:
- Upper Filter Assembly: A cylindrical component, often with a mesh screen.
- Lower Filter: A flat mesh screen situated beneath the upper assembly.
- Remove the Upper Filter: Grasp the top of the Upper Filter Assembly and turn it counterclockwise (usually about a 1/4 turn). It should unlock, allowing you to lift it straight up and out.
- Remove the Lower Filter: The Lower Filter generally sits directly underneath the upper one. In many models like the KDFE104 series, after removing the Upper Assembly, you can simply lift the Lower Filter out. Check if it feels loose or requires a slight turn or specific lift based on your model’s design.
- Clean Both Filters: Rinse the Upper and Lower filters thoroughly under warm running water. Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) or a soft sponge to gently scrub away any stuck-on food particles or greasy buildup from the mesh screens. Important: Do not use wire brushes, scouring pads, or any abrasive materials, as these can permanently damage the filters.
- Check the Sump: With both filters removed, inspect the area underneath (the sump) for any debris that might have bypassed the filter or accumulated there. Remove anything you find.
- Reinstall Filters Correctly:
- Place the Lower Filter back into position, ensuring it sits flat and aligns properly with the tub bottom under any locating tabs.
- Insert the Upper Filter Assembly back into the opening in the Lower Filter. Push down gently and turn it clockwise until it locks securely into place. You should feel it seat and lock; it should not feel loose.
- Crucial: Never operate the dishwasher without the filters correctly installed and locked. Doing so can allow debris to enter the pump system, potentially causing significant damage.
Step 3: Inspect the Drain Hose
The drain hose is the pathway for dirty water from your dishwasher to your household plumbing (sink drain or garbage disposal).
- Check for Kinks: Carefully trace the ribbed drain hose from where it exits the dishwasher (usually the back or side) to its connection point under the sink. Look for any sharp bends, kinks, or sections that might be crushed or pinched, as these restrict water flow. Gently straighten out any kinks you discover.
- Check for Blockages (Use Caution):
- Place towels or a shallow pan under the connection point to catch spilled water.
- Disconnect the end of the drain hose from the sink drain pipe or the garbage disposal inlet nipple (it’s usually secured with a spring or screw clamp).
- Visually inspect the end of the hose and the connection point for any obvious blockages.
- Try blowing gently through the hose (towards the dishwasher end) to check for airflow. Significant resistance suggests a clog within the hose. Minor clogs can sometimes be cleared by carefully probing with a flexible wire (like a straightened wire coat hanger, being cautious not to puncture the hose) or by attempting to flush the hose with water.
Step 4: Check the Sink Drain / Garbage Disposal Connection
The blockage might be downstream from the dishwasher itself.
- Check Sink Drain: Ensure your kitchen sink is draining freely. A clogged sink will prevent the dishwasher from draining properly as well.
- Check Garbage Disposal Connection: If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal:
- Run the Disposal: Before starting the dishwasher, run the garbage disposal for 15-30 seconds to clear any food debris that might be obstructing the dishwasher drain inlet port.
- Check Knockout Plug (Especially Crucial for New Installations): Garbage disposals come with a sealed inlet port for the dishwasher hose connection. During installation, a plastic “knockout plug” inside this inlet nipple must be removed. If the disposal is new, or if the dishwasher connection was recently made, this plug might have been inadvertently left in place.
- Safety: Ensure power to the garbage disposal is OFF at the circuit breaker.
- Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the disposal inlet nipple.
- Carefully look and feel inside the nipple. If it’s blocked by solid plastic, the knockout plug is still present. This plug needs to be removed. Typically, this is done before connecting the hose by using a screwdriver and hammer to punch the plug inward into the disposal chamber. Then, retrieve the plastic plug from inside the disposal chamber (use pliers, not fingers). If you find the plug is still in place, this is almost certainly the cause of your draining problem.
Step 5: Check the Air Gap (If Installed)
Some plumbing codes require an air gap fitting – usually a small chrome or stainless steel cylinder mounted on the countertop or sink edge near the faucet. Its purpose is to prevent dirty sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Air gaps can become clogged with food debris.
- Locate: Identify the air gap fixture on your sink deck.
- Clean:
- Lift or unscrew the decorative top cover.
- Inside, you’ll see a smaller plastic cap or assembly. Remove this inner cap (it might unscrew or pry off gently).
- Check for and remove any gunk, food debris, or buildup blocking the path between the smaller hose connection (from the dishwasher) and the larger hose connection (to the disposal/drain) within the air gap body. A small brush or pipe cleaner might help.
- Rinse the parts thoroughly and reassemble the air gap. A clogged air gap can cause water to leak out onto the counter or prevent the dishwasher from draining.
Step 6: Consider the Drain Pump (Advanced Check)
If all the above steps fail to resolve the draining issue, the problem might be internal to the dishwasher itself:
- Drain Pump Obstruction: Small, hard debris (like broken glass, plastic shards, or fruit pits) might have bypassed the filter system and physically jammed the drain pump’s impeller.
- Drain Pump Failure: The electric motor that drives the drain pump may have failed. This might require testing with a multimeter for continuity.
- Check Valve Issue: Some models have a check valve near the pump to prevent water from flowing back into the tub; this valve could potentially get stuck closed.
Accessing the drain pump typically requires pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter and potentially tipping it or removing access panels underneath. While online guides may exist, attempting internal pump diagnosis or replacement carries risks of causing further damage or personal injury if not done correctly. Consult your user manual for any specific guidance, but issues involving the drain pump are often best addressed by a qualified service technician.
When to Call for Service
If you have meticulously performed all the checks above – cleaned the filters, inspected the drain hose for kinks and clogs, confirmed the sink drain and garbage disposal connection (including the knockout plug) are clear, and cleaned the air gap (if applicable) – and your KitchenAid KDFE104 dishwasher still isn’t draining, it’s time to seek professional help.
